The Dentist’s Fear
Odontophobia or fear of going to the dentist affects, to a greater or lesser extent, a considerable number of people, especially children! It is, in fact, a problem recognized by the World Health Organization and several dental institutions as a disorder with negative consequences for physical health and for the quality of life of those who suffer.
Whether due to fear of the unknown or fears transmitted by other people (even by their parents, consciously or unconsciously), many children experience anxiety in these situations. Therefore, knowing how to treat a patient afraid of the dentist properly is a basic skill that every dentist should have.
In fact, having a good treatment with infant patients is a great opportunity to get them to become adults with good oral health and without fear of the dentist.
In this case (as indeed in all others, but especially when dealing with children), the important thing is to create a relaxed and pleasant environment in the office, as well as to explain, in a simple way, what the procedure consists of. Drawings or photographs can be a great help, making the child participate in our work and allowing him to get to know his own body better.

Space is like a small universe adapted to the little ones, fun and relaxed, with animated characters so that, while playing, very important information about oral hygiene.
Of course, something as simple as having a pleasant conversation, in a relaxed tone, also contributes a lot to establish a good atmosphere in the office.
The Comfortable Environment
At Atelier do Sorriso, the environment helps to reduce the child’s anxiety. Everything is controlled in detail, as we know how certain odors, noises, or the simple sight of some equipment or instruments can trigger feelings of dislike or uneasiness.
In this sense, relaxing music, an environment with a pleasant aroma and attractive furniture can help to calm the patient and, in a way, abstract him from the environment that is usually associated with a clinic. A well-chosen painting or print can also be useful to achieve a more attractive environment.
