Facial microneedling is an aesthetic procedure that uses a device with fine needles to make tiny punctures in the skin. At our Atelier do Sorriso clinic, in the centre of the Algarve, we use the Dermapen device, explained below.
Microneedling is generally used to improve the appearance and texture of the skin, reduce fine lines and deeper wrinkles, improve skin elasticity and treat skin problems such as acne, scars and dark spots.
Microneedling can be used on the face, neck, décolletage and arms.
It is a non-surgical, non-invasive technique with excellent results on widened or depressed scars and contour irregularities.
How does Dermapen microneedling work?
At Atelier do Sorriso, microneedling is carried out with a device called Dermapen, which looks like a pen and makes tiny punctures in the top layer of the skin.
We apply an anaesthetic gel to the skin and then pass the Dermapen over the area to be treated. The treatment induces collagen through a series of needles that enter the skin vertically, creating micro-injuries for faster, more precise penetration.
How long does Dermapen microneedling take?
The procedure usually takes 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the area treated. It is a technology with proven, impressive results.
Does microneedling hurt?
The procedure is usually painless, but may cause a tingling feeling or mild discomfort.
Afterwards the skin may be red and swollen, but these effects are temporary and usually disappear within a few days.
Microneedling for a Double Chin: Does It Work?
For the area under the chin, studies and clinical reports suggest that microneedling can be effective for mild to moderate sagging.
However, for a more pronounced double chin, where there is a significant build-up of fat, microneedling may not be enough.
Alternative Double Chin Treatment: Injectable Enzymes
When a double chin is mainly caused by fat, alternative treatments such as enzymes – for example Belkyra (known in the USA as Kybella) or PPC – may be more suitable. Belkyra is based on deoxycholic acid, which helps dissolve the fat under the chin and can significantly reduce it, improving the facial contour.
PPC is another option for breaking down localised fat. It must be applied by qualified professionals and may need several sessions, depending on the amount of fat and how the body responds.

What aftercare is needed after microneedling?
After microneedling it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions so the skin heals well and you get the best results.
General aftercare includes:
- Avoid hot showers or vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours.
- Apply a gentle moisturiser twice a day to keep the skin hydrated and help it heal.
- Use sunscreen every day to protect the skin from UV rays and prevent dark spots or scarring.
- Do not rub or pull the treated skin.
- Avoid sun exposure and direct sunlight for at least a week.
- Do not use strong chemicals, such as acids or abrasive cleansers, on the treated skin for at least a week.
- Do not have other aesthetic procedures, such as chemical peels or laser treatments, for at least a week after microneedling.
Following these recommendations will help the skin heal and give you the best possible results.
